Man Caught With Pound Of Cocaine In Hudson Valley Stop, Police Say

A 26-year-old man is behind bars after being caught with more than a pound of cocaine during a stop late Wednesday night on I-87 in Woodbury.

State Police stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation just after 10 p.m. During the interview of the driver, probable cause to search the vehicle and its occupants was established, state police said.

The driver of the vehicle, Alexander Zapata of the Bronx was found to be in possession of over one pound of powder cocaine. He was taken into custody, transported, and processed at State Police's Newburgh site and subsequently charged with:

  • Criminal possession of a controlled substance in the first degree, a Class A felony
  • Criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, a Class B felony (narcotic drug with intent to sell)
  • Unlawful possession of marijuana; a violation
  • Vehicle and traffic violation

Zapata transported and arraigned in the Town of Woodbury Court and remanded to the Orange County Jail with no bail. No return court date has been announced.
